The challenges of the COVID pandemic continue to be felt on the economy. This past holiday season, experts described peak season as muted, flat and a host of other descriptors sparking questions as to when we’ll see the economy bounce back? Should carriers be concerned? Gulf Relay’s Chief Operating Officer Andy Vanzant looks back at history to give us the answer. In each presidential election year, the economy is bolstered by the Fed and other agencies as leadership looks to be re-elected. The question then becomes for 2023: Will truck load supply diminish enough to continue to offset the decreasing economic output from shippers? Ultimately, people will cast their ballot in the voting booths in 2024 but will also vote with their wallets. That in turn translates to more production of goods and more shipping. Will it be enough to spark a jump for carriers to make money in peak? We’ll find out.
